Token Honeypot Checker: How to Check if a Token Is a Honeypot with a Real Buy and Sell Simulation

Short answer: simulate a buy and then a sell of the token before you spend real money. If the sell reverts, or returns only a fraction of what you paid, it is a trap. DeepGyre's free token honeypot checker runs that buy and sell simulation for you, and nothing is signed or sent.

What a honeypot is

A honeypot token lets you buy and then stops you from getting your money out. It usually takes one of three forms:

Three ways a token traps you
  1. Blocked sell: the sell transaction reverts. You can buy, but you can never sell.
  2. Punitive sell tax: the sell goes through but returns only a small part of the value.
  3. Sell cap or blacklist: only small amounts, or only approved wallets, can sell.

Why reading the code is not enough

Many checkers read the contract or ask a database. A token can pass every static flag and still refuse to sell. In our first study we found a token on Base whose every sell reverted, while a widely used reference check said it was not a honeypot. The chain confirmed it: 42,536 addresses had bought from the pool and not one had ever sold back into it.

That is why a token security scanner should simulate a real trade instead of guessing from the code.

How the DeepGyre simulation works

Buy, wait, sell: the simulation
  1. Buy. A keyless address receives native coin and buys through the chain's main V2 router. If the full size fails, we retry at 1/10 and then 1/100.
  2. Wait. The sell lands 5 blocks and 72 seconds later. Many tokens block a sell in the same block as the buy, and an honest anti-bot rule should not be read as a honeypot.
  3. Sell. We approve the token and sell it all back to the wrapped coin. If that fails, we retry at 1/2 and then 1/10.
  4. Verdict. We compare what came back with the pool's own quote. That gives the effective round-trip cost, including any tax the token takes while you sell.

All of it runs as a simulation (eth_simulateV1) on public endpoints. No transaction is signed or broadcast.

Reading the result

  • Sell reverted: a honeypot. Do not buy.
  • High effective tax: the sell works but costs you heavily. Compare the result with what the project claims.
  • cannot_sell_all: a per-trade cap. It is not a honeypot, but you may need many sells to exit.
  • Not applicable: there is no V2 pool against the wrapped coin, or the pool is too thin to quote. This means we could not measure the token. It does not mean the token is safe.
  • Our simulation and the reference check disagree: we show both answers side by side and do not hide the conflict. That is transparent on-chain data in practice.

Step by step

  1. Copy the token's contract address from the project's official page, never from a reply or a DM.
  2. Open the honeypot checker or the full token security scanner.
  3. Choose the chain (Ethereum, BNB Chain or Base) and paste the address.
  4. Read the sell result first, then the tax, then the holder and contract risk factors.
  5. Before you buy, compare the contract on the scanner with the address you are about to use. Fake tokens copy names and symbols.

FAQ

Can I sell this token? Run the simulation. If the sell succeeds at full size and the effective tax is low, the token can be sold at that block. A contract owner can still change its rules later.

Is a 10% sell tax a scam? Not necessarily. It is a cost, so make sure it matches what the project published.

Does the check cost anything or touch my wallet? No. It is a simulation, and your wallet is never connected.

Which chains are supported? Ethereum, BNB Chain and Base for the trade simulation. The scanner covers more chains for contract and holder checks.
